The richly dressed man stands above him with staff and fine garments, separated from the beggar by status, comfort, and a hardened conscience. The doorway, climbing vines, and decorative vessel suggest a prosperous household, while Lazarus remains exposed on the ground, longing for mercy.

The scene draws from Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. The contrast is not merely poverty and wealth, but spiritual blindness and neglected compassion. Lazarus, named in the parable, receives no help at the gate, while the rich man’s abundance becomes a witness against him.
